Record Jackets
The recording career of White Dolemite has been questionable to say the least. While often accused of producing self indulgent material, unit sales insured that he continued to record again and again. Each album would challenge a new genre, “Sexx Trumpet” tackled the dingy seedy world of club jazz inspired by the likes of Clifford Brown and Arturo Sandoval. While “No Need To Ask My Name To Figure Out How Cool I am” concentrated on the Paris Lounge Core attitude of the 60’s. It is reputed that when asked to produce the album, Serge Gainsborg turned the offer down as the material was “too sexist and quite disgusting”
The launch party for “Sexx Trumpet” caused almost as much controversy as the album itself. White Dolemite insisted that the “Birdland” club on New York city’s West 44th Street should host the event what with it being the “home of jazz” And the club agreed to the event. What nobody was prepared for was the fact that White Dolemite insisted on playing the entire set wearing nothing more than he wore on the record jacket.
As with his movie career, White Dolemite’s exploits into the music recording have become as legendary as the man himself, and the music world is a slightly brighter, or grubbier place thanks to his presence.
